Oahu, known as the “Gathering Place,” offers some of the most stunning hiking trails in Hawai’i. From the lush rainforests to coastal cliffs, here are some of the best hikes on the island that will leave you in awe.

1. Diamond Head

One of the most iconic hikes in Oahu, this trail offers panoramic views of Waikiki and the Pacific Ocean.

Difficulty: Moderate

Distance: 1.6 miles round trip

Highlights: The trail ascends the inside of a volcanic crater, leading to a breathtaking lookout at the summit. Don’t forget your camera for the spectacular vistas!

FYI: The trail isn’t free! Make sure to reserve your tickets ahead of time.

2. Makapu’u Point Lighthouse

This paved trail provides stunning views of the southeastern coastline and the historic Makapu’u Lighthouse.

Difficulty: Easy

Distance: 2 miles round trip

Highlights: Ideal for whale watching during the winter months, the hike offers sweeping ocean views and a glimpse of the neighboring islands on a clear day.

FYI: Get there early for a good parking spot.

3. Lanikai Pillbox

A popular hike on the windward side of Oahu, offering stunning views of the Mokulua Islands and Lanikai Beach.

Difficulty: Moderate

Distance: 1.6 miles round trip

Highlights: The trail features two old military pillboxes (bunkers) at the summit, providing the perfect spots for panoramic photos. The sunrise views here are especially spectacular.

FYI: There is no dedicated parking lot for the trailhead. You will have to park in the surrounding neighborhood. Make sure you are respectful and don’t park on private property.

4. Ka’ena Point

This coastal hike leads to Oahu’s westernmost point, offering rugged natural beauty and wildlife sightings.

Difficulty: Easy

Distance: 5 miles round trip (from the Waianae side)

Highlights: Experience dramatic ocean views, tide pools, and a chance to see native Hawaiian seabirds and monk seals.

FYI: There are 2 ways to access the hike, the east and west side.

5. Koko Crater Runway

Known as the “Stairmaster from Hell,” this trail involves climbing an old railway track to the top of Koko Crater.

Difficulty: Challenging

Distance: 1.8 miles round trip

Highlights: The steep ascent is worth the effort, with panoramic views of Hanauma Bay, Diamond Head, and the southeastern coastline of the summit.

FYI: Start the hike early and bring plenty of water. The hike is already quite challenging, and becomes increasingly more difficult as the sun rises.
